The Blue Valley High School boys soccer season just recently ended, with the club soccer season right around the corner.
Freshman Daniel Middleton said he personally enjoys school soccer more than club soccer because he can play with his friends, and his competition is all people that he knows.
“It is a lot of work, and a lot of practice, but it is worth it when you get to represent your high school during a soccer game,” Middleton said.
Middleton said the players that he faces in club soccer are better than the players
“I think the competition is better in club soccer,” Middleton said. “They all are really dedicated to soccer because they are paying a lot of money to play.”
Freshman Brady Petersohn said school soccer practices are more fun than club soccer.
“Practices for school soccer are better,” Petersohn said. “They are way less serious — especially on JV. You usually don’t have to run a lot.”
Middleton also said that school soccer practices were better than club soccer practices.
“I would have to go with school soccer practices,” Middleton said. “They are always very fun and you are with all of your friends while having fun.”
However, Middleton said the coaching is better for school soccer.
“The coaches are not getting paid to coach, so that shows they are dedicated to the sport rather than just coaching to get paid,” Middleton said. “Usually the club coaches have more experience or skill because they are usually former players, but they might not always be dedicated to coaching.”
Petersohn, however, said he thinks club soccer coaches are better than school soccer coaches.
“The coaches for club soccer usually have experience in the game. Just because you are dedicated to soccer doesn’t mean you are a good coach,” Petersohn said. “I think you need to have some personal experiences or some skills you can teach your team.”
Freshman Kyle Ruder said he thinks it just depends on how good of a coach they are and how much they know about the game of soccer.
Ruder said the players for school soccer are more fun.
“They are all your friends from school not just random people you got paired with by your skill level,” Ruder said.
Ruder also said club is more work, but school is more fun.
“I think that school soccer is very fun, but I really didn’t have to try that hard during practices and to get ready for games,” Ruder said.
Middleton said there is controversy on which club soccer team is the best.
“There is a big argument in which soccer club is the best,” Middleton said. “I think Sporting Blue Valley is the best,” Middleton said.
Freshman Logan Slead disagreed
“I think the Legends Soccer Club is the best soccer club because they have the best skills,” Slead said.
Petersohn said club soccer is more work.
“As for the amount of fun you have, everyone thinks school soccer is more fun,” Petersohn said. “I think that club soccer is more work, because they take it more seriously.”
Ruder said he dislikes the fans for club soccer.
“I think the fans are more annoying during club games because they are way more serious,” Ruder said. “Obviously, they are paying a lot of money to watch their kid play soccer, and I think they are usually more passionate about soccer than some of the high school players fans.”
Middleton agreed with Ruder when he said club fans were annoying.
“Club fans are definitely more annoying because they take soccer way more serious, and sometimes they are just really rude,” Middleton said.
However, Slead said he thinks not all of parents are annoying, it depends the type of parent they are.
“I know some school players’ parents are really annoying because they think their kid is the greatest thing to ever touch the earth.”
Local mom Elisa Berg said she just loves watching her kids play no matter what the level.
“I love watching any of my kids soccer games, but I like watching school soccer because I love watching my son play with all of his friends,” Berg said. “I like club soccer because I think you get to know the parents better. They both have their goods and their bads.”
During game time, Slead said school soccer was the best.
“School soccer is more fun because I think it is more relaxing,” Slead said. “It is kind of different and fun to play sophomores and juniors.”
Middleton said he felt the same way.
“When the team takes the field, I think school soccer is more fun because you have all of your friends supporting you,” Middleton said. “You have to savor every moment of the season because it goes by very quickly.”
Petersohn had the same idea but he said he liked the attention.
“During games, I like school soccer better because all of your fans are people that you know and I really like representing my school and hearing my name over the loudspeaker,” Petersohn said.
Middleton, however, said he thinks that school soccer is fun, but not challenging.
“Overall I think school soccer is more fun but club soccer is more challenging and competitive,” Middleton said.
Slead said he thought of school soccer as more fun and club soccer as more serious.
“I just think school soccer is so much fun and a great way to play with your friends from school,” Slead said. “However, I believe club soccer is where I would go to play the best players around and to get more of a challenge.”
Middleton said he loves both as long as he is playing soccer.
“I love both school soccer and club soccer,” Middleton said. “If you like soccer, and you have the dedication, then you will like both, too.”
