Want to save some extra cash? Don’t like airplanes? Need to just get out of Johnson County? Here are four destinations worth your weekend.
Jacks Fork River: 4 hours, 30 minutes
Located in Eminence, Missouri, this spot is well worth the drive. Jacks Fork river is one of Missouri’s most beautiful and peaceful rivers. Open all year, one can rent a kayak, canoe or raft and paddle as much or as little as wanted, up to 44 miles. The river has multiple access points that resemble beaches, along with the beautiful Rock Falls, a miniature waterfall with a large crystal pool. This is a perfect destination for relaxation and serenity.
Cottonwood Falls: 2 hours, 15 minutes
Nestled close to the Flint Hills, Cottonwood Falls is a great site for history fans. This town was settled in 1854 with the iconic Chase County Courthouse as the center display. Visit the Courthouse, explore the nearby National Geographic Scenic Byway or travel down the main street — Broadway — lined with antique shops, boutiques, historical museums, pottery and art galleries and vintage restaurants. Cottonwood Falls is a great single-day trip.
Lake of the Ozarks: 2 hours, 30 minutes
They say true beauty lies underneath — this is especially true in the Ozarks. This area is famous for its beautiful caves. Specifically, Fantasy World Caverns is a must-see. At Fantasy World Caverns, check out the famous Underground Lake, Bear Bed’s, Onyx Falls and Moonshiner’s Dam with other various caverns to experience. See stalagmites, stalactites and the glowing underground lakes in person — perfect for a family road trip.
