Tori Magee-Bryant, 10 — Christmas and Valentine’s Day
“I have a mini tree. It’s white, and I get baby ornaments. We have a seasonal tree, so we do, technically, decorate for Valentine’s Day. We put Christmas decorations on it, like letters, family photos — everything, really.”
Leah Snitz, 12 — Hanukkah
“We put up blue streamers around our railings. We have a ‘mench on the bench.’ It’s a play on Elf on the Shelf. We put up menorahs, and we have a lot of blue and white plates, silverware [and] fun blue and white decorations. All the Jewish holidays definitely have an associated food. This time of year, my favorite food is latkes.”
Emily Titterington, 10 — Christmas
“It’s a really big deal to me. We’ll have tinsel going down our stairway, and it’ll be up on our shelf. We have this huge Christmas tree. It looks like it has snow on it, and it’s a red and gold theme. Our stockings have snowmen, horses and a Santa Claus on them. We have these two horse statues outside. We’ll put Christmas hats on them, and then we’ll put presents by them. This big Christmas sign goes on our door, and we obviously have our lights up outside. Our tree rotates and the ornaments and everything go in rows — the tinsel separates everything. We have this angel that goes on top of our tree, and I get to put her on top every year.”
Abby Salehpour, 10 — Christmas
“We put up the tree. We bought a really big nutcracker; there’s a lot of lights on it. We put little presents underneath the tree, and we put little nutcrackers too. Lights — we puta lot of pastel colors. We bought this little Grinch bottom, and we put little elf shoes on the tree. We also put pom poms, cupcakes and soft teddy bears on it.”
and Valentine’s Day
“We usually buy a bunch of roses, place them near our house, and then we find little boxes of chocolates.”
Abby Reeves, 12 — Hanukkah
“We have lots of blue and silver stars around the houseand penguins all around for the winter. Then on Hanukkah, you light the menorah. And each one of us has our own menorah throughout the holiday. We more decorate for the season of winter.”
Shreya Agarwal, 10 — New Year
“We redecorate the house with winter things. We change the wreath at our door. I make sugar cookies and colored buttercream frosting, and as a family, we decorate the cookies with the frosting and sprinkles. On New Year’s Eve, we party, but if we don’t, we play a game in the basement and watch a movie. Hindi Bollywood [movies] or ‘Home Alone’ — depends on our mood.”
