Humans of BV: Bennett Calvert
As a freshman in high school, sophomore Bennett Calvert was given the opportunity to stage manage in previous productions such as “The Addams Family Musical” and the choir department’s spring show.
“It’s really an honor,” Calvert said. “I’ve never seen anyone as a stage manager as a freshman, so it’s a great opportunity.”
Having been on the acting side in middle school, Calvert began his journey of technical theater this year by working backstage for the underclassmen musical “Descendants.”
“It’s crazy year — might as well make a crazy decision and do something different in the theater department,” he said.
Calvert prepared for the position with the mentoring of previous stage managers Claire Powell and Dori Jezmir.
“Working Claire Powell and Dori Jezmir has shown me how a production should be ran.” Calvert saif. “The experience has taught me how to balance the complications and moving parts that make up a production.”
Calvert plans on continuing his involvement with technical theater, as well as acting, throughout his high school experience.
“My favorite part about stage managing is when during notes, I get to sit up in front of the stage and look out at our production and see how far we’ve come,” Calvert said. “It makes me happy. Oh my gosh — I love it.”
