In schools and universities around the world, students have the opportunity to start new clubs and hold meetings for their interests. At BV, there are currently about 109 clubs that provide a place for students to explore their various passions, whether for academics, community service, culture, future jobs or others. For junior co-president Audrey Fullerton, Spanish Club was the perfect chance to share her passion for, well, Spanish.
“Spanish Club is a place for people who love Spanish culture and the language,” Fullerton said. “You don’t have to be in a Spanish class or have a certain GPA — it’s just a fun hangout place.”
As a club that doesn’t have any requirements to join, it was created to provide a space for people who want to learn more about the culture or don’t have the chance to take Spanish because of their conflicting schedules. Although Spanish Club had been a club before, it had halted for a bit due to graduated leadership.
“Señor Dean started talking to me about it because he was telling me how they had it in previous years, but it hasn’t really been a thing for the past year or so,” she said. “I just thought it’d be fun to start that up again and start a new tradition with it.”
With other co-president Abby Reeves, the pair have held two meetings so far this school year.
“So far, we’ve made paper flowers and Day of the Dead bread,” Fullteron said. “We’re planning to do more easy, fun activities that everyone can participate in. We’re also trying to celebrate Spanish holidays [with] themed activities.”
This passion for Spanish started around five years ago when Fullerton first started taking the language in middle school.
“[Spanish class] makes my mornings better. I look forward to going to class when I have it,” they said. “The club has been so fun, it’s made me happy to just see everyone having a good time.”
