Some kids can’t wait to get a car to go to school, or they have others drive them; however, some BV students go beyond the car.
Freshman Nicholas Myers bikes to school, “It’s easier [than driving], and my house is close to here,” he said. “I like looking at nature.”
He finds biking tolerable until around 40 degrees out, “then it gets too cold,” he said.
He maintains the same route year-round, building in about two minutes for bad weather.
Essential cold-weather gear includes a jacket, gloves, and long pants. “I have a flashlight,” he said. He uses the flashlight for visibility and has a backup plan for extreme days.
Although he feels safe and plans to continue biking until he can drive, the question for some students might be where to put the bike during the school day. “We don’t have a bike shelter,” Myers said. “I lock up my bike with a bike lock.”
On the contrary, Senior Stefan Bajic “walks to school every morning,” he said. “It’s just cool,” and plans to continue doing so for the rest of high school.
Stefan plans to stay on route, though he doesn’t feel it’s necessary to allow extra time in the event of bad weather.
He finds he can only walk to school when the temperature is above 10 degrees. “When days are too cold,” he said, “I just walk.”
Similarly, senior Daniel Bajic walks to school
“Ever since I was young, I always wanted to walk to school.” he said.
That motivates him to continue even in the cold. Bajic finds it convenient to walk rather than drive.
“It’s easier, saves some gas,” he said.
