The Blue Valley debate squad ended their regular season last weekend. Debate teacher Chris Riffer said it was one of the best closings the team has ever had.
The team won the Lawrence High Sweepstakes Award after competing against 32 other schools. This was the first time Blue Valley won this tournament in 18 years.
This past weekend the team also won the inaugural Blue Valley Southwest Sweepstakes and had teams place at Maize, Kan. and at Lawrence Free State High School.
Seniors Samantha Nichols and Allen Xu have led the team this season. Riffer said junior Sam Nicol and sophomore David Cline have also been doing very well lately, and they have gone undefeated at the past two tournaments.
This coming weekend Blue Valley will be attending the National Qualifier Tournament. This is a tournament in which only the top varsity teams will compete.
Riffer said he was very pleased with how the regular season turned out.
“I was really happy with how many kids earned metals,” Riffer said. “As far as the regular season goes, we exceeded every goal I could have set.”
