The goal of Girls State is to inculcate a sense of responsibility to community, state and nation.
The program is non-partisan and designed to teach young women about American democracy.
Senior Caitlin Holland attended Girls State last year.
“I heard about it on the announcements and I went and talked to [counseling secretary] Mrs. [Cindy] Snell about it,” she said.
Holland earned a scholarship from the American Legion Auxiliary and attend Girls State for free.
“I really enjoyed getting to know so many leaders from across the state,” Holland said. “And realizing I can have an influence and a say on our government and how it works.”
Holland earned the position of state Commissioner of Insurance and went on tour of the government building and meet Governor Mark Parkinson.
