The Quill and Scroll International Writing and Photo Contest honored six newspaper staff members with the Gold Key Award as national winners. Award winners are 2010 graduates Allison Kohn and Katie Louis, senior Ryan O’Toole and juniors Maegan Kabel, Sara Naatz and Olivia Roudebush.
“It is a leg up,” newspaper adviser Jill Chittum said. “Adding this on their resumes makes them look a little better and might raise them to the top.”
A grand total of 3,248 entries were submitted with only 220 entries selected as national winners. Gold Key Award recipients are eligible for scholarships if they decide to pursue journalism in college.
“It is great for students to be recognized since they work so hard behind the scene at school,” Chittum said. “They aren’t performing under Friday night lights, this is like their cheer from the crowd.”
