On Wednesday, Sept. 12, Blue Valley will host its second annual car smash.
From 6-9 p.m. during the Homecoming Bonfire, students will have the opportunity to whack a car with a sledgehammer.
This year, the car smash will benefit Future Educators of America (FEA) instead of Project Playground, and the money raised will fund their activities.
“The car smash is a way for FEA to raise money and help us do projects for our community,” FEA member junior Courtney Elven said. “Students can pay $1.00 to hit the car three times. It’s a great way to raise money and for students to have fun and release some anger.”
Sante Fe Tow will be donating the car.
“They’re going to make sure they give us a safe car,”  Elven said. “They’ll check it out before they give it to us, so someone doesn’t hit it and blow up.”
The car smash will take place to the left of the stadium entrance, in front of the practice fields.
Since she didn’t participate in the car smash last year, sophomore Haley Koenig said she has a few concerns.
“I’m afraid I’m going to miss the car and hit myself,” Koenig said. “Or chop off my finger. Either one.”
However, Koenig said she is also excited to see the finished product.
“I’m really excited to see what the car looks like after it’s smashed,” she said. “It’s funny to see people try to smash a car.”
Koenig said she thinks the event raises money in a unique way.
“I thought it sounded fun and it was something different our school does,” she said. “I’ve never heard of another school doing a car smash. I think raising money just makes people want to do it more, knowing how what they’re paying for is going to a good cause.”
