Too much homework

Many students have complained that teachers give out too much homework.

“It’s mostly just busy work — junior Rachel Outlaw said. It doesn’t really help me come across a concept only class time does that.”

Students who take AP classes said that they are some of the hardest classes in high school.

Outlaw said “AP classes and math classes tend to give the most homework. I know I’ve felt overwhelmed by the amount of assignments and limited time given to do assignments, considering extracurriculars and jobs.”

Flip teaching is becoming a new and upcoming trend at Blue Valley. Many teachers like Chemistry teacher Neerav Shah and Biology teacher Kale Mann have switched completely to flip teaching.

“Since switching to flip teaching, students have done a lot better in my class,” chemistry teacher, Dr. Shah said.

A lot of students actually prefer flip teaching, because it allows them to study and move at their own pace, and students have less homework along with it.

“It would be better for some students but not for everyone,” Outlaw said.

Another strategy teachers are switching on is online homework.

“I’d prefer online homework because it’d allow me to stay more organized and stay on top things easier,” Outlaw said.

Outlaw wishes to see a change in how teachers assign homework, because they feel too overwhelmed with trying to balance grades, school activities, and outside of school activities like jobs.

“I want to be able to have free time after school to be friends and family. I also want to be able to go to work and not have to worry about finishing my homework.” Outlaw said.screen-shot-2016-09-22-at-2-12-24-pm
