When choir director Sam Dollins first started teaching at Blue Valley High School, he directed three shows – Pop Show in the Fall, the school musical in the Winter, and the Spring Show in the Spring. This year, however, he introduced a new show called Sounds of the Season, which includes a myriad of holiday and winter music.
With an entirely new show, it has opened up a multitude of new opportunities for students, such as senior Clara Thompson who assisted in choreographing the show.
“I choreographed a number called ‘Holiday Film Festival’ and I choreographed a dance feature called ‘Candy Cane Lane,’” she said.
With choreographing being a new creative outlet for Thompson, and having worked on it during a show choir summer camp and the school musical Hadestown, her choreography and dancing abilities have both seen advancements.
“Choreographing [for the musical] definitely elevated my capability and potential,” she said. “I think it’s going to be a really fun.”
Beyond dancing, this new show has given many opportunities for soloists to have their moment to shine. Sophomore Mason White, for one, received a major solo in the JV show choir’s song Jinglebell Rock.
“I was really surprised,” he said. “Mr. Dollins didn’t even audition it. We were discussing, [and he said] ‘By the way, Mason, you have a solo.’”
Along with this solo, White felt that this show has also opened other doors.
“It’s been really fun,” White said, “I think it’s given me a lot more stuff to be able to a lot more chances to be able to do things.”
Sounds of the Season will be on December 12th, 13th, and 14th at seven. While the show is in its first year, the choir has hopes that it continues to serve as a tradition for the performing arts department, and improves over the years.
“I think it’s a good way to get people to come watch [us],” White said, “People like to go do holiday [activities]. I think, just as the years go on, it’ll become bigger and better.”
