Superintendent for Hire
Mid January four students, juniors and seniors, were selected by principal Charles Golden to be interviewed by an organization that works with school districts. They were asked about our school environment, what they wanted to change our school, and what they value in superintendents, for someone the district might hire, following the retirement of Tonya Merrigan.
Senior Jazzmyne Means, one of the students selected, praised Merrigan for her involvment in the school, attendance at sports and music events.
“It was super informative, I learned what a superintendent does,” Means said. “It was nice to hear from other students how they appreicate the enivorment and what they wanted to change.”
Sophomore Scholastic Win
The Scholastic Key awards are given to artworks that are unique, stand out and demonstrate technical skill among the pool of submissions the judges get each year. Sophomore Olivia Wang won this award in a regional Gold Key.
“Regional Gold Keys are automatically submitted to the national level, but national results haven’t come out yet,” Wang said.
She won this award for her piece, Uncover, made with charcoal on paper.
“I found out in my 7th hour class,” Wang said. “After anticipating the release of results for the entire day, I was surprised, relieved, and really happy to know that my hard work paid off.”
Meeting Heimler’s History
On Feb. 26, a few students met Heimler’s History, a YouTube channel run by Steve Heimler that helps many high school students review for AP tests and classes.
Senior Zaida Awan was one of the students who met him.
“I watch him for AP Gov, which I’m currently in, but I watched him a lot for AP World and APUSH,” she said.
She likes the fast-paced videos loaded with information.
“He frames everything in AP curriculum and how to word things, so you get benefits,” Awan said.
“He was super nice in person even when I was super nervous,” she said.
