In the year of 2015-16, the school calendar is seeing some major changes. One of these changes is the start and end dates for the school year.
When we come back to school in August, we will be coming back earlier than we ever have.
This year, we started early on Aug. 14, but next year, we will be starting on Aug. 12.
Now, I know what you are all thinking, but there is a bright side to starting this early. We are guaranteed to be out of school before Memorial Day.
If we use four snow days, then our last day of school will be May 26, 2016. However, if we don’t use any snow days, then our last day of school will be May 20.
This is exciting news for those who want summer break to start earlier, but this also means that school will start earlier. This is the one flaw with the school districts new plan.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that we will be getting out of school before Memorial Day, but I think we should go back to school after Labor Day.
Around the country, many students don’t go back to school until after Labor Day. This is not the case in the Blue Valley School District.
If we were to begin after Labor Day, then students would get a well-deserved break from school. Students wouldn’t have to suffer being outside in weather that is above 90 degrees.
Being outside in this extreme heat can cause health problems to become heightened, and elementary school kids are less enthusiastic about the time they get to spend outdoors during recess. Middle and high school students who have gym class outside will be more enthusiastic about going outside after Labor Day, when it’s cooler.
Overall, I think the changes being made to the school calendar for the 2015-16 school year are good.
I think the school district has made a good decision in ensuring students will be on summer break before Memorial Day weekend. This will allow families to travel without having to worry about coming back to school and facing finals.
Sure, we have to go back to school earlier, but it’s only by two days, and I think we get the better end of the deal by getting out of school before the end of May.
