As prom draws nearer and nearer, my social media and my real life are being bombarded with all sorts of dresses. Coming in sparkles, silk, and sequins in every color under the visible light spectrum, the options are endless. And I can’t help but think back to some of my favorite prom dresses in high school media.
5. Andie, “Pretty in Pink”
In all honesty, I think this dress is… definitely not amazing, but it’s definitely not hideous. I wouldn’t wear it. However, for Andie’s character, it is the perfect dress. It’s fashion-forward, a little out of the box, and holds a lot of sentimental value. I love that she put it together herself, and it is undeniably a precious dress.
4. Gabriella Montez, “High School Musical 3”
Although I’m pretty sure Gabriella never actually goes to prom, I love this dress. I don’t know why it’s short (probably to dance in?) but still, it is so cute. It’s just so fun and swishy. As a younger girl watching this movie, I can say this is absolutely what I saw myself wearing to prom. Also, I think hair accessories at formal occasions are definitely underused.
3. Sharpay Evans, “High School Musical 3”
I know, having two dresses from the same movie isn’t very creative. However, I just had to mention both. High School Musical 3 was my very idea of prom for a decade. This dress is so cute. I love bright, sheeny dresses, I love the silver belt and matching bracelets, and I love the neckline. I am not crazy about the tulle on the bottom, but considering how much I love everything else (the gloves! Very Marilyn Monroe) I am more than willing to overlook it.
2. Carrie, “Carrie”
It’s impossible to talk about fictional prom dresses without mentioning the Carrie White. If we ignore what happens to her about a minute after this photo, this look is so great. The peachy color on her is so flattering, and I am a sucker for a clean, classic silhouette. Also, unrelated to the dress, but her hair in this scene? Perfect.
1. Kat Strafford, “10 Things I Hate About You”
Of course, I had to save the best for last. I have dreams about this look. It’s sophisticated and straight-to-the-point, just like Kat. I love the shawl (every good formal look needs a shawl), I love the hair, I love the color, I love the silhouette–there isn’t a single thing about this look that I can critique.
