Is it a bird? Is it a plane? It’s a penguin!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Its a penguin!

Recently, a new species of penguins were discovered called the Kumimanu Fordycei penguins — and they’re giant.

Penguins are quite scary when they’re huge, especially when they are one of the biggest penguins ever discovered. Fossils were found while excavating on the New Zealand beach side.

The giant penguins are estimated to weigh around 160 kilograms, as much as a giant panda! For context, an average penguin is about 1.1 kilograms! In addition to weighing a bunch, they also can reach up to six feet tall.

These creatures roamed the New Zealand seas 50 million years ago and, according to experts, would probably be much more graceful than other penguins in the water. It is expected that this species was an apex predator in its time, occupying the New Zealand waters with only turtles and fish.
