After placing first at regionals, the girls tennis team earned the title of state champions this weekend in Emporia for the first time in BV history.
Seniors Ashley Tiefel and Audrey Coventry played each other in singles in the championship round. Tiefel won and placed first overall.
Junior Payton Meyer and sophomore Jessie Alexander, and freshmen Jenny Moon and Shivani Patel paired up for doubles placing tenth and eleventh, respectively.
The BV tennis coach of eight years, Nelson Elliot, said the girls played extremely hard to earn the title.
“I’m just ecstatic,” he said. “We thought all year that we had a chance, but we knew it wasn’t easy. I told the girls ‘Nothing worthwhile is ever easy,’ and every single girl played really hard.”
