BV advanced to the quarterfinals of  the 5A state playoffs with a 35-34 win at Bishop Miege. The Tigers and the Stags matched up for the second time this season, this time however much more was on the line.
The Stags scored quickly on the game’s opening possession after a long catch and run got them inside BV’s ten yard line, the Stags followed it up with a touchdown pass.
BV answered on the following possession with a touchdown pass by junior Kyle Zimmerman, his first of three of the game, to senior Jacob McDermott.
After forcing a Bishop Miege punt BV drove the ball down the field deep into Stags’ territory before a Zimmerman pass tipped by McDermott was intercepted and taken all the way back for a Bishop Miege touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff senior Bryant Reber returned the kick for a touchdown to tie the game at 14 with the first quarter coming to a close.
The Stags turned the ball over on downs at the BV 37-yard line but BV was unable to take advantage of the field position and had to punt it right back.
The next two possessions ended with a Bishop Miege punt and another BV punt.
The Stags managed to drive the ball into BV territory on the next possession but after a sack by senior Alex Newell on third down the Stags went for it on fourth down and were unsuccessful.
BV gained possession at their own 41-yard line and had a chance to take the lead with a field goal before halftime but it was blocked after a miscue on the snap.
BV and Bishop Miege went into the half tied at 14.
On the first play from scrimmage in the second half McDermott scored on an 80 yard touchdown run to give the Tigers a 20-14 lead after a missed extra point.
After a Bishop Miege punt Zimmerman threw his second touchdown pass, this time to senior Paul Debey to extend BV’s lead to 28-14 after a successful two point conversion.
The Tigers regained possession after another punt by the Stags. Zimmerman connected on a flare pass to junior Justin Fulks for a touchdown giving BV a 35-14 lead.
The Stags responded with a short touchdown run on a quarterback sneak to make the score 35-21 to end the third quarter.
A BV fumble gave the Stags another opportunity and they took advantage with another touchdwon pass.
BV punted on their following possession but the Tigers took it back with an interception by senior Kevin Foote.
However BV fumbled again giving the Stags another chance. Bishop Miege did not squander it this time and scored on a short quarterback keeper. The Stags trailed 35-34 and opted to go for the win late in the fourth quarter with a two point attempt, but BV’s defense held and maintained the lead.
Bishop Miege attempted an onside kick with just over two minuted remaining in the game. BV recovered the kick and a rush for a first down by Fulks with 1:24 remaining sealed the victory as BV just kneeled the ball to end the game with a 35-34 win.
