The Blue Valley volleyball team won the 6A sub-state title on Sat. Oct. 20.
The first match of the day was against Shawnee Mission North, resulting in scores of 25-5 and 25-3.
After playing SMN, BV faced BV North in the sub-state finals match with scores of 25-11 and 25-18 to take home a bid to state.
Prior to the 2012 sub-state championship, BV volleyball hadn’t made a state appearance in 11 years.
“It feels amazing to win sub-state the second year in a row and be able to return to the state tournament,” co-captain senior Rachel Gearon said. “I feel so lucky to have such an amazing team to play with, and I can’t wait to go and finish our business this year.”
This year’s team is composed of three seniors, four juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen.
“Being a freshman, it was hard to adapt to the level of play these other girls have been accustomed too,” freshman Whitney Hinmon said. “The upperclassmen have been awesome leaders this year, and they’ve taught me so much.”
Hinmon said the team chemistry has been a main factor of the team’s success so far this season.
“We’re just one big family on and off the court,” Hinmon said. “This has been the best season I could have asked for.”
The BV volleyball team earned the number two seed in the 6A State tournament. They begin the tournament today at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka. The top two teams of each pool will advance to the State semi-final match tomorrow, and the winners of each semi-final match will compete in the State title match.
