Riding a four-game winning streak, the BV Tigers looked to continue their victory against one of the toughest opponents of the season, the Mustangs of BV North. With home-court advantage on a Friday night, the stage was set for a memorable rivalry game.
Unlike some previous EKL games, the Tigers wasted no time getting out in front. Guard junior Will Brennan and guard sophomore Tyler Geiman each nailed two three-pointers in the quarter. The Mustangs, not to be outdone, responded accordingly with patient offensive sets. The first quarter ended with the Tigers holding a one point lead, 14-13.
However, the Tigers found less success shooting the ball in the second quarter with only two successful shots from the floor. Mustang center senior Cooper Cook, standing at 6’6”, was a menace to the Tigers’ drives toward the basket. BV North began finding an offensive rhythm and carried a 23-22 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, Cook began taking over. Cook nailed four field goals and hit two free throws, scoring 11 points in the quarter. BV was unlucky with shooting accuracy, again hitting only two shots all quarter. The Mustangs took advantage of a sluggish BV transition defense and began to separate, leading 38-31 into the fourth quarter.
Twice, Tigers pulled the game to within four points. Twice, the Mustangs missed free throws, leaving the door open to a comeback. However, the Tigers had three shots roll in and out of the hoop and could not come up with any turnovers. BV North finally began hitting free throws and put the game to bed, 42-50.
The Tigers fall to 7-7 and will face BV Southwest on Tuesday at 7:00.
