Sophomore Ava Meissner runs in a relay. “It’s fun to cheer on my friends and just have [fun] competing,” Meissner said.

On May 16 the varsity track team attended regionals. This year, the meet was at the Olathe District Activities Center, and started at 3 and ended around 10, depending on the event the student took place in.

Each of the Blue Valley schools, including Southwest, West, North, Northwest, and High were present and also Olathe East, North, Northwest, West, and South.

The girls varsity track team won many events. For the single person running events, Tori Wingrove won 3rd place in the 3200, Elle Hempy won 2nd in the 100-meter dash, senior Dymon Preyor won 2nd in the 300-meter hurdles, Jazzy Klinge won 3rd in the 400-meter dash and Sarah Prickett won 2nd in the 100-meter hurdles.

In shotput, senior Morgan Skinner won 2nd place and Megan Lemons won 4th. Megan Lemons also won 4th in discus.

Finally for jumping events, Dymon Preyor won 2nd place in long jump and also 3rd place in triple jump. Junior Julia Pettijohn finished off the wins with a 1st place in pole vault.

As for group events, the girls varsity track team got 4 by 100-meter relay won 4th, the 4-by-400 won first place.

Along with many wins, the girls track team managed to break seven records this season so far.

Those who placed with 4th place or above are advancing to State, which takes place May 25th.

Although many are preparing for State, there are also many on the Varsity girls track team who are moving on to track at the collegiate level, which will involve a strict summer training regime.

If students are interested in joining the track team next year for the 2020 season, tryouts will take place next spring.
