Over this recent summer, a group of friends discovered their love for volleyball, consisting of Oliver Jackson, Daniel Cheon, Kevi Dhakal, Michael Leach, Lila Schlagel, Chris Marvel, Ben Kim, Isaac Johnson, Melody Xue and David DeCoursey among others. This group found itself hanging out and playing volleyball over the summer, found itself committed to improving at the sport and later titling itself as the “BVH Timewasters.”
Originally started by playing casually with a few friends in a sand pit, one of the main pioneers in the development of the level of play was Ben Kim. Kim invited his friends to play at his house occasionally, considering he already had a net from his previous year of playing. This shift from sand to grass garnered even more attention from his friends, leading to the establishment of a few concurring players.
Among those players, Lila Schlagel was a recurring player. After playing more with the group, Schlagel opened up her backyard for a closer and more accessible place to play, even during the week, as opposed to only the weekend. This increase in frequent play led to the development of a static team known as the BVH Timewasters.
Playing from summer into the school year, the Timewasters began to seek other people to play again in hopes of improving not only their skill, but their validity as a team as well. Students within Blue Valley started to hear about this team and follow suit. Teams such as The Dolphins and The Block Busters made an appearance, sharing the same interest in volleyball. The Timewasters went so far as to receive recognition from the already established girls’ varsity volleyball team, playing them informally.
All in all, the BVH Timewasters have found themselves to be a prominent group in the school. Carrying an undefeated record in official matches played, they remain the most dominant team in the Blue Valley atmosphere. As they continue to navigate participating in a recreational sport amongst one another, the Timewasters won’t forget where they came from and where it brought them.
